All employees who have potential occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens should receive initial and annual refresher training. The course includes: a description of the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, an overview of the epidemiology, symptoms, and transmission of bloodborne pathogen diseases; an explanation of the use and limitations of engineering controls, work practices, personal protective equipment; a discussion of the types, uses, location, removal, handling, decontamination, and disposal of potentially infectious materials; an overview of the Hepatitis B vaccination; procedures to follow if an exposure incident occurs, including the method of reporting the incident and the medical follow-up that will be made available; and an opportunity for interactive questions and answers with the person conducting the training session.
Goals:
The course will provide background on OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens & Needlestick Standard, an overview of bloodborne-type diseases, awareness training on institutional and individual responsibilities for risk assessment and protection of employees.
